Learn how to clean, maintain, and reapply Martexin Original Wax on your waxed canvas bag to preserve its water resistance and rugged look.

Quick answer

To care for Martexin Original Wax on your bag, spot-clean with a damp cloth and reapply wax every few months or when water stops beading on the surface.

Why waxed canvas needs special care

Waxed canvas develops a rugged, distressed patina over time, but the wax coating wears off with use and exposure. Regular maintenance keeps the fabric water-resistant and prevents it from becoming stiff or brittle. Unlike untreated canvas, you cannot machine-wash or dry-clean waxed canvas without stripping the wax.

When to reapply wax

If water soaks into the fabric instead of beading up, or if the canvas looks dry and faded, it is time to refresh the wax. Most users reapply every 3 to 6 months depending on how often they use the bag and in what conditions.

How to care for Martexin Original Wax on your bag

  1. Clean the surface: Wipe the bag with a damp, lint-free cloth to remove dust and dirt. For stubborn stains, gently rub with a soft brush or sponge. Do not use soap, detergent, or solvents—they will strip the wax. Let the bag dry completely before applying new wax. Any moisture trapped under fresh wax can cause mildew.
  2. Warm the wax tin: Place the closed tin of Martexin Original Wax in a bowl of warm (not boiling) water for 5–10 minutes. Soft wax spreads more evenly and penetrates the fibers better. Do not microwave the wax or heat it on a stove—direct heat can alter the formula and make it too runny.
  3. Apply wax in thin layers: Use a clean, dry cloth or a soft brush to apply a thin, even coat of wax to the canvas. Work in small sections, rubbing the wax into the fabric with circular motions. Focus on high-wear areas like corners, flaps, and edges. Less is more. A thick layer will feel sticky and attract lint. You can always add a second thin coat after the first dries.
  4. Heat-set the wax: Use a hairdryer on low heat or a heat gun on the lowest setting to gently warm the waxed areas. Hold the heat source 6–8 inches away and move it continuously until the wax melts and soaks into the canvas. This step bonds the wax to the fibers. Keep the heat moving—holding it still can scorch the fabric or melt the wax unevenly.
  5. Buff and cure: After the wax cools for a few minutes, buff the surface with a dry cloth to remove any excess and create an even finish. Let the bag cure for 24 hours in a room-temperature, well-ventilated area before using it. Do not fold or stuff the bag during curing—the wax needs to set without creases.
